5 Ways to Celebrate National “I Love My Feet” Day
/Unless your smartphone has automatically filled in your calendar for you, it may come as a surprise that August 17 is National “I Love My Feet” Day! You can celebrate this holiday with a tip of your hat and a “thank you” to your feet for carrying you around wherever you go. Or, you can show them just how much you care.
Here are five ideas for you to implement and share with your friends who also care about their foot health:
Indulge in some pampering: It’s the perfect day for a luxurious at-home foot massage or salon pedicure. If you choose the salon, remember to follow our advice about how to keep it safe.
Do some targeted exercises: Even the most dedicated athletes sometimes forget to exercise their feet and ankles. Strengthen your muscles and improve flexibility while watching TV or minding the stove: use your toes to write the alphabet in the air, do a few sets of ankle circles, or refresh tired feet by rolling them over a frozen water bottle or small rubber ball - particularly good for soothing plantar fasciitis pain.
Spend some quality time with your feet: Examine them closely. Study your skin for changes in moles that could signal skin cancer. Check your nails for ridges, white spots, or signs of ingrown toenails. Report any concerns to the board-certified podiatrists at one of our Monmouth County podiatry offices.
Give them what they’re thirsting for: After a shower, apply thick moisturizing cream everywhere – but avoid the spaces between your toes to discourage fungal infections. Outside in the sun, your feet want to drink up the same suntan lotion you apply to the rest of your skin.
Review your shoe closet: Toss any shoes with holes or worn-out soles. Try on your winter boots; if they’re beat up, uncomfortable, or don’t have any arch support, replace them before the snow flies.
Finally, if you’ve been experiencing pain in your feet or ankles, use this national holiday to jumpstart getting the care you need.
