Athletes Benefit from Excellent Foot and Ankle Care

Athletes in Monmouth County and beyond will want to know this: April is Foot Health Awareness Month. There’s no better time to pay attention to your foot health! As a runner, walker, basketball player, softball enthusiast, skier, or tennis pro, you know that your feet and ankles are subject to stress and injuries more than the Average Joe or Jane. It’s just a fact: sports injuries to the feet and ankles are extremely common for children and adults.

This Foot Health Awareness Month, all of us at Affiliated Foot & Ankle Center want to offer you specific ways to care for your feet. Follow these suggestions - and share them with your kids - to help keep feet and ankles strong and protected:

  • Wear the right shoes. We can’t stress this enough. Each sport has its own kind of shoe because every sport is different in terms of the stress it puts on the feet and ankles. It’s not only important to get the proper shoes for your sport -make sure they fit well, too.

  • ·Wear socks that don’t bunch up or swish around inside your shoe. Neither should they be too snug. Change your sweaty socks daily to prevent fungal infections. Opt for moisture-wicking socks to help prevent blisters or other skin lesions.

  • Deal with foot pain promptly. Putting off care will likely make treatment harder and lengthen the healing process. Visit us without delay to prevent a small problem from becoming a big one. We are on call 24/7 and will make every effort to see you immediately.

  • Don’t play doctor. It’s not always easy to tell how extensive an injury such as an ankle sprain is. Let our board-certified podiatric surgeons assess your injury and provide expert treatment

  • Follow through with physical therapy. Many sports injuries require a regimen of physical therapy to heal properly. It’s important to go through with our recommendations for therapy. When you do, you’ll get your strength and flexibility back and also prevent re-injury of the area. We have a dedicated physical therapist on staff, so you don’t have to go to a separate facility to receive expert PT.

Even when you take the utmost precaution, you or your little athlete may still suffer an injury. When you do, visit our board-certified podiatrists, Dr. Samantha Boyd, Dr. Hal Ornstein, Dr. Dan Phan, and Dr. Joseph Saka. We have expertise and years of experience dealing only with ailments of the lower limbs. Call us for an appointment in Howell or Jackson, New Jersey, at (732) 905-1110 or make an appointment online.
